This week's Szechuan gem will make you sweat (in a good way!)

April 25, 2025

The most unforgettable dining experiences often hide in plain sight, tucked between grocery stores and pharmacies.

Too often, Northern Virginia diners miss extraordinary authentic cuisine because they're distracted by flashy marketing or swayed by unreliable reviews. Many of us have spent significant money at premium restaurants based on hype, only to leave disappointed. Meanwhile, modest strip mall restaurants serving exceptional food go undiscovered just minutes from your home.

This week I'm taking you on a journey through NoVA's restaurant scene where we'll explore:

  • A hidden Szechuan gem in Vienna that's worth the sweat
  • An exciting new European café opening in Falls Church
  • The latest NoVA restaurants competing for RAMMY awards

Let's dive into this week's discoveries!

If you're looking to elevate your dining experiences beyond predictable chain restaurants but aren't sure where to start, here are the resources you need to discover authentic food experiences this week:

Chili Wok: A Hidden Gem of Authentic Szechuan in Vienna

Tucked away in a bustling strip mall on Maple Avenue, Chili Wok might be easy to miss, but this small Szechuan restaurant is serving up some of the most authentic Chinese cuisine in Vienna. With just about 12 tables in its modest dining room, what this establishment lacks in size it makes up for in bold, memorable flavors and a steady stream of devoted customers.

The restaurant's popularity is immediately evident from the mix of dine-in patrons – predominantly Asian and Asian-American – and the constant flow of takeout orders, all efficiently managed without disrupting the dining experience. While parking is plentiful thanks to the adjacent Giant and CVS, securing a table during peak hours might require some patience given the limited seating.

Don't let the casual strip-mall setting fool you – the menu here is a testament to authentic Szechuan cooking, ranging from approachable classics to more adventurous offerings like duck blood and intestine soup. During my recent lunch visit with a friend, we dove into several standout dishes that showcased the kitchen's expertise.

The aptly named "strange flavor cucumber salad" ($8) is a must-try appetizer that lives up to its intriguing name. This seemingly simple dish delivers an unexpected symphony of flavors – simultaneously hot, sour, sweet, and salty, with an underlying umami that makes each bite more compelling than the last. It's a perfect example of Szechuan cuisine's complex flavor profiles.

The star of our meal was undoubtedly the GangHood fried chicken, featuring thigh meat that's perfectly executed with a delicately spiced, crispy exterior giving way to remarkably tender meat.

The double-cooked pork belly offers a richer option, generously accompanied by scallions, peppers, and cucumbers. Their take on fried rice elevates the familiar dish with bacon and pickled cabbage, creating an impressive balance between rich and acidic flavors.

A word about spice: true to Szechuan tradition, heat is a consistent theme throughout the menu. While not overwhelming, it's present enough that my dining companion was noticeably sweating by meal's end – something to consider for those sensitive to spice.

Service here follows a more traditional Chinese style – don't expect the typical American restaurant experience of frequent check-ins. Staff are efficient but hands-off, requiring you to flag them down when needed. Dishes arrive as they're ready rather than in courses, fitting the casual, authentic atmosphere.

The lunch specials ($12) offer particularly good value, featuring smaller portions of main menu items (which typically run $16-18 during dinner) accompanied by your choice of soup, a spring roll that's notably superior to typical takeout versions, and rice. Our substantial lunch for two, including several dishes and drinks, came to $66 total.

Chili Wok represents a slice of authentic Szechuan cuisine that's increasingly hard to find in the suburbs. While it may not offer the polish of fine dining, it more than makes up for it with the quality and authenticity of its food. Just remember to come prepared for a casual experience, embrace the spice, and don't be shy about flagging down your server when needed.

3 NoVA Restaurant News Stories You Need to Know This Week

Taste of Vienna Returns This Weekend

The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department will host the 12th Annual Taste of Vienna this Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The free-admission event transforms the fire department's back parking lot into a festival featuring local restaurants, a beer and wine tent, live entertainment, and children's activities.

Admission is free, attendees can purchase food and beverages from participating vendors, with proceeds directly benefiting the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. The event has become a beloved community tradition that showcases the town's dining scene while supporting the volunteer firefighters who have served Vienna for over 120 years.

Fairfax Restaurants Shine as RAMMY Award Finalists

The Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) has announced the finalists for the 2025 RAMMYS Awards, with notable representation from Fairfax County restaurants, particularly in Tysons. Ometeo at Capital One Center made the list for Upscale Casual Restaurant of the Year after opening in December 2023. Stellina Pizzeria, which launched its largest location at Capital One Center last April, is competing for Casual Restaurant of the Year.

Andy's Pizza, which began in Tysons Galleria's food hall in 2018 and has expanded to about a dozen locations including Fairfax City and Ballston, is a finalist for Fast Casual Restaurant of the Year. The Restaurant Manager of the Year category includes nominees from NoVA establishments: Lorena Reyes of Founding Farmers (Tysons and Reston Station) and Antonio Chavarria of Open Road Grill in Merrifield.

Public voting for several RAMMY categories will take place May 1-31, with winners announced at an August 3 gala in DC.

Pupatella Co-Founder to Open Little Falls Café in Falls Church

Anastasiya Algarme, who helped build the award-winning Pupatella pizza empire, is branching out with a new concept opening next month. Little Falls Café will bring elevated European fare to a charming historic building on Little Falls Street in Falls Church when it opens in mid-May.

The cozy creperie promises a romantic vintage atmosphere filled with items Algarme collected from European flea markets and American antique stores. Unlike Pupatella's Neapolitan pizza focus, Little Falls will specialize in savory buckwheat galettes and sweet crepes made with organic flour, with most ingredients sourced from the Falls Church Farmers Market and local producers.

Algarme plans to be hands-on with this more intimate venture, working at the café daily to build community connections. The establishment will serve breakfast, lunch, and a European-style aperitivo hour from 4-7 p.m.

Next time you're driving past a modest storefront with a steady stream of customers, consider stopping in - you might discover your next favorite restaurant hiding in plain sight.
